Clutch Wallets - The Evolution of the Clutch Wallet
The clutch purse dates back all the way to the early 1800’s. Originally referred to as “reticules,” this clutch style purse was used by ladies to carry their handkerchief, smelling salts and rice papers for blotting the face. During World War II, the clutch purse increased in popularity due to the low manufacturing cost and minimalist lifestyle.
Today, there are thousands of clutch styles available. One in particular is called the clutch wallet. The clutch wallet is a flat rectangular shape designed to be used either as a clutch or as a wallet in a larger handbag. Since the clutch wallet is the perfect size for opera glasses, it has commonly been referred to as an “opera wallet” or “flat wallet.”
Generally, the clutch wallet has 5 or 6 slots for credit cards and an additional opaque section for a driver’s license. There is usually a zipper closure pocket for loose change, along with a separate space for dollar bills. The cover of the flat wallet varies greatly. Patterns include animal prints to floral patterns. Often the pattern has texture adding depth and interest to this unique accessory. In addition to the main features of the clutch wallet, a matching checkbook cover is often included. Additional features may include an attached cell phone case, pen holder on the inside and detachable shoulder strap.
Although minimalism is key with a clutch wallet, women today are carrying more than just a few credit cards and cash. The clutch wallet has evolved to accommodate the needs of the modern woman.
In addition to creating a thicker version of the clutch wallet to make room for lip gloss and other necessities, a cell phone case has been attached to the outside making the clutch wallet the perfect evening bag. The cell phone case has been tested and fits just about every type of cell phone. The average dimension of the cell phone case is 4.75” L x 2.5” W. The flexible material allows the right amount of space for standard cell phones as well as the blackberry, and iPhone.

Use it as a wallet in your handbag or briefcase during the day and at night ditch the large handbag and carry the clutch wallet with your necessities for a great night.
