Diesel Engine
Diesel Engine

Despite the benefits, many motorists still have a poor opinion about diesel engines. The most common complaint is of weak power when compared to a similar gasoline engine, and in particular, the performance a diesel gives when accelerating from a standstill. The good news is that a diesel engine can be easily tweaked to give you increased power without compromising the fuel economy.
You're probably aware that diesel engines get better fuel economy that gas engines. On average, you can expect to see a 20% to 30% increase in miles per gallon when using diesel vehicles over gasoline. They simply don't burn as much fuel so you are guaranteed to save money over the long term.
Diesel engines are also easier to maintain. Unlike engines running on gasoline, they don't have an ignition system, so you will never have to tune it up.
Another benefit is that the exhaust gases is less corrosive on a diesel. This means your exhaust system will last longer and additionally you will be pumping less harmful gases into the environment.
This increased longevity is the reason that diesel engines are used for virtually all road freight around the world. Diesel trucks will get more miles per gallon and are much likely to break down.
It's not uncommon for some vehicles to show 500,000 miles, or in extreme cases, even a million miles on the clock!
When it comes to pulling power, diesel has a supreme advantage. The engines tend to run at fewer revolutions per minute and one of the side effects of this is increased torque. Torque is a measurement of the amount of twisting force an engine has.
When it comes to maintenance, it's very important to have regular oil changes. Diesel fuel isn't as refined as gasoline and has more particulates. This means the oil gets dirtier faster and should be changed every 3000 miles or so. You should also keep an eye on your air and fuel filters and replace these at least once a year.
These days diesel engines have come on in leaps and bounds. The old days of noisy, slow, smoke emitting diesel vehicles is over and today's cars and vans have comparable performance in many respects.
The main consideration between gasoline and diesel is this. If you need fast acceleration and you don't carry heavy loads very often, go for gas. If you plan to keep your vehicle for more that 100,000 miles and you want that extra but of pulling power, go for the diesel.

Can any diesel engine fit a 98 Grand Voyager?
According to one mechanic, my front wheel drive minivan would not be worth the cost of putting the Sprinter's engine in. Is there any diesel which may work? Perhaps a foreign engine?
That is, be retro-fit? I know that someone put a Caddie 500 into a Chevette, nevermind what some have done to poor little Pintos. So, I have a theory that a small diesel for a fwd vehicle may work. Can it be done?
Anything is possible, but not worth the money.
