A great way to save is by purchasing a used tractor. Professional farming tractors are very expensive new. And most of the big companies that build them like John Deere design tractors that will last a long time under harsh farming conditions. This is why getting used tractors are very cost effective because you are getting quality at an affordable price. Those looking for tractors usually look at the local classifieds where there is usually a limited supply.
Now on the net there are many places to get great deals from auction sites to dealers selling used tractors to individual owners. Be careful to inquire as to what the fees are such as shipping. These can really add up. Especially hidden fees!
The best bet is to find a used tractor for sale within driving distance of your farm or property. When inspecting tractors check to see if there was a written maintenance record kept. A good tractor mechanic can assist in determining how well the tractor has been maintained. It might pay to get a local tractor mechanic to inspect the unit before purchase. Check for any axle leakage which may be a sign of a future expensive repair.
When deciding on a model get one with a wide front end because older antique models with a narrow front tend to roll more which is hazardous.
For Diesel Tractors seeing stack smoke could be an indication that the fuel injectors are clogged and the possibility that the rings and washers need to be replaced. This should be indicated in the final price.
Inquire as to what type of fuel additives have been used to control stack smoke so that you know how the tractor will perform with different fuel mixtures.
One of the benefits to searching for antique tractors is that not only do they perform normal tractor functions they are also highly valued collector items. As of late very large rare tractors from the 30's, 40's, and 50's have been bought by investors in Europe and shipped abroad. Their values are climbing steadily like rare art work. Some tractors fetch 100k- 200k.

What is the best tractor?
I want a tractor for our home garden. It's a good sized garden - about 125' x 125' so we definitely need a tractor. I have looked at the Farmall Cadet and a Power King and a Ford Low Boy or something like that. Anyone have any good suggestions?
Thanks for your help!!
You have suggested some good tractors to be sure! However I would shy away from the Power King, a workhorse, however it tends to be underpowered and is no longer being manufactured. Replacement parts availability tends to be problematic.
Being in Winston Salem myself I would choose either the ford, or a kubota. Both have a dealer in town so parts would not be an issue with those brands.
Check for local tractor dealers in your area. When something breaks, it never fails to be at the worst time when you need the tractor most right NOW! So have a parts outlet local to you!
