What is the European & candadian take on the difference between Democrats and Republicans?
I'd be interested in hearing the opinion of any Europeans. Canadians , Brits and aussies- and what do you think of the differences between the values of the american Democrat and Republican parties? In America, people tend to think of the Republicans as right wing, and the Democrats as left wing. A good friend from Holland tells me both parties are right wing by European standards- is this true?
I can't speak for Europeans, but Canadians usually just equate the Republicans and Democrats with our own existing political parties. The Republicans we equate with our conservative party, the Democrats with our Liberal Party.
By our standards obviously the Republicans are right wing, and the Democrats are kind of middle of right and left (like our Liberal Party). We definitley don't equate Democrats with being left wing though, that's solely for the realm of socialists, and the Democrat platform is definitley not socialist like the NDP for example.
I think it's really just a matter of domestic politics we're all used to. In the United STates socialism is a bad word, whereas in Canada it's tolerated and in some European countries its even encouraged, so I think the domestic politics kind of skews our views of American political parties a little bit.

Has anyone read a book that had two completely different stories going on simultaneously?
I am writing my own novel, but there are two heroins with their own separate stories going on that end up coming together by the beginning of the middle of the story. But before i attempt to write such a thing, I need to read another book similar to this and study it so I know how to craft a novel like it. The only person I read (and who, apparently, is a master of this) is Louis Sachar. But he blends past stories with present stories. I am trying to blend two present stories. My original plan was to go ahead and write the novel by developing both characters and letting them share chapters and certain parts of the beginning before they come together, which made sense to me. Does anyone know of any books like this, or any writing sites that give advice on crafting these types of novels? Please and thank you so much!
It is a rather long series, but A Song of Ice and Fire has even more than 2 stories that don't interact for the longest time going on.
