Suspension and Steering – Camaro restoration tips and tricks, Chevrolet Camaro front end restoration
Camaro Front Suspension & Steering
For this article I will focus on the front suspension and steering on the camaro, Chevrolet used this type of independent front suspension on a lot of their cars, so this could apply to almost any of Chevrolet's of their muscle cars from the 1960's or the 1970's.
First of all Chevrolet used a wishbone design front suspension with an upper, and a lower control arm, and they used this design with great success for a lot of years, it was setup using a coil spring positioned between the lower control arm and would fit in to a seat in the sub frame rail.
The shock absorber would pass the middle of the coil springs, this suspension setup is the same for the first, and second generation of the camaro with one difference, and that is the steering linkage, the recirculating ball steering gear, and the parallelogram type linkage.
These consist of a pitman arm, and an idler arm, center link, tie rods, integral steering knuckles, and wheel spindles on the first pension and cross member, due to handling issues with the first generation, the steering linkage was moved to the front of the cross member in the second generation cars.
When your restoring the front suspension of your camaro you need to inspect the pitman arm, and an idler arm, center link, tie rods, integral steering knuckles, and wheel spindles, as a matter of fact I would just replace all of it for safety reasons, you might as well do the job right.
I would inspect the upper and lower control arms for rust, and for the holes where the bushings go to be oval-ed out when the last owner didn't replace the bushing when they needed to be replaced, or maybe they didn't lube the car regularly.
If the upper and lower control arms show any ware at ll I would replace them for your safety, there are some things that you just don't try to save money on, you should also have the coil springs load tested to see if they are reliable enough to put back in the car again.
When I restore a car I usually just replace the entire front suspension and steering to be 100% sure that the driver won't have safety issues with the car, this isn't just for aesthetics, it can hurt you very badly if it's not done the right way, so take you time, and do it right the first time.
Also one other part of the steering that I don't think that i mentioned here is the steering box, this would attach to the sub frame of the car, and the pitman arm would attach to it, you need to look closely at this also, if it has a lot of play in it, or it's hard to move the ste
ering, you should replace it. My biggest concern when I restore is that I make sure that it will be a safe reliable mode of transportation, something that the people who drive it can depend on, or if it's just a show mobile, a car that can take a prize at the show.

Where is the steering gear box on a 1993 Ford F150.?
Im looking at the 1993 ford truck from the front. Now where is the steering gear box located cause im trying to tighten the steering wheel. Or does anybody know of a diagram on the internet. Thanks

i have some problem i would like fixed with my car...any estimations?
i have a 95 two door ford explorer and there are many things i would like to fix. prob is i first need to know how much.
the cruise control buttons are falling off and the steering wheel seems to be separating prob due to airbag deployment before i obtained the vehicle...how much to fix that?
also. the tint is starting to bubble on one of the windows.
how much to fix that?
also. im pretty sure that the vehicle has an after market muffler but i doubt that it was installed properly because i always smell fumes and the car sounds like a tractor. not like a good muffler sound that people try to get it just.. sounds crappy. how much to fix that?
and something is wrong with the air conditioner. when i turn it on it blows hot but then also starts to smell like the car is on fire.
how much am i looking at here?

How important is it to repair worn-out idler arms?
We have a '95 Chevy Astro Van that has idler arms that are completely worn out. Can someone please explain what idler arms do? I have to admit that the steering has a lot of "play" and that I'm probably lucky I haven't been pulled over for drunk driving. How severe is this issue? What will happen if we wait another month or so to repair the idler arms? Is this a repair that can easily be done at home? Thanks in advance for your help!
This is a repair that can be done at home, but define "easily".
The idler arm(s) are, for the lack of a better term, a brace for some of the steering linkage. It is positioned such that it allows movement in only one orientation, and resists movement in another.
It is designed to allow the steering linkage to control the front wheels from right to left without allowing the linkage to move up or down.
When they wear out, up and down movement is possible, and will cause the "play" you feel in the wheel.
It isn't very safe to continue to drive in this condition. If you are always in control of your vehicle and the area around it, this merely results in having to "herd" you vehicle down the road.
But if someone invades your space, or if you are on roads where excess steering control is required (traffic, wet roads, etc.) it becomes quite dangerous for both you and those around you.

Are suicide knobs illegal in Texas?
I had carpal tunnel years ago and used a steering wheel spinner (knob) to help me drive. Now, I do not suffer from carpal tunnel, but I have become so accustomed to using the knob I want to keep it. I was wondering if someone could tell me this. References on any laws concerning this would be most appreciated. TIA!
I'm going to say "probably". I can't find the specific statute where they are outlawed, neither can I find any where the are explicitly allowed either, except in case of disability.
Common searches tend to have the consensus that they are illegal outside of disability. I did find mention in the administrative code for driver's license tests that they're an "applicable device" if the driver is disabled, but I think you already knew that.
